Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) was the first English who entered an Ottoman harem. She was married to the British ambassador in Turkey, her “letters” were frequently cited by English women travelers. She criticized contemporary social attitudes towards women in many of her writings she is also known by her pioneering of smallpox inoculation. She adopted the traditional dress of the Turkish country.
